Apples of Gold

Week 18/2024

A word fitly spoken is like APPLES OF GOLD in a setting of silver [Proverbs 25v11]

The Bible uses illustrations from the natural world to highlight spiritual truths so they are understandable throughout the ages. A good example is the first Psalm where the analogy is used of a tree flourishing next to water to highlight the impact that those who are in a close relationship with the Lord and seek to live godly lives have on society. “Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night. That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither – whatever they do prospers”.

Not only does this tree provide fruit, but shade from the relentless heat of life. Because it prospers, the tree is a blessing to those who are associated with it – so is somebody who delights and meditates in God’s law instead of associating with the wicked and embracing their mind set. What is this law which not only provides shade for others who are withering under trials, but also food to grow and keep strong? Jesus explained in Matthew 22v37: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment“. And the second is like it: “Love your neighbour as yourself”.

Wouldn’t this world be a foretaste of heaven if we delighted in this law? No more violence, corruption, bullying, stealing, murder and all manner of evil, instead – a world where we seek the good of others. If we are trees that provide shade and fruit to all those we come into contact with, we will in some small way be light in this dark world. That is true prosperity.

Amen
